Old and upcoming birthdays

It has been a while since my last post, and I apologize for that.  Life with three kids can get really crazy sometimes, and time just gets away from you! I have been very preoccupied with my baby girls upcoming 1st birthday, as well as a valentines day party we are having at our house for the kids. For the boys birthdays I have always known what I was going to do for the party and cake at least 4 months in advance, but this time around I just couldn't get it all together.  I think I have finally figured out my theme for it and its only two weeks away! So while it is on my mind I thought I would share the boys first birthday cakes.

This was the first cake (cupcakes I guess) that I got to do for my kids, for N's birthday  It was also the first time I ever used gel food coloring, and now know that you need to add a lot more then I did here to get the colors you want! I always said I would never buy a cake for my kids, and now it has become quite the hobby for me which is awesome!

This was J's first birthday cake.  I had gotten the giant cupcake mold for my birthday and was very excited to use it! I haven't used it since but now that I have a little girl I'm sure it will get its use! It was a lot of fun decorating this one too! We did a combined birthday this time with a friend of ours.

I realized the other day that first birthdays have always been cupcakes, so keeping with tradition S's first birthday with have cupcakes too! I will post pictures after the party!

I have also been working on some crafting projects. One is for my niece and will have to ask my sister if I can post pics of it later, since it has her picture on it.  And the other one is a chore chart for the boys, I am hoping to make a tutorial for that one, but am waiting for the weather to be nicer to do some spray painting.

Pink Ponies and Silly Suppers

Pink Ponies...well really its a horse but it sounded cuter this way! In my last post I showed a cute little rocking horse I found at the thrift store, and I found some time this week to get it painted.  I really like how it turned out!

 Before

 After
It goes with the colors in her room very well.  Some times I think after having two boys I get a little carried away with her room and stuff...

As for the Silly Supper, tonight when the boys asked what was for supper and I said mashed potatoes and meatballs, my oldest asked if we could have fun colors.  Well why not! We did blue mashed potatoes a few years ago and he loved it then! So after a bit of thought my oldest (N) asked for purple and the younger (J) for red. and so here it is...

YUMMY!!!!

They thought it was awesome because it looked just like their playdoh.  Lets hope J doesn't think he can eat the playdoh now!

Thrifting!

My husband has the week off, so yesterday I was able to do some kid free shopping. Which has not happened in a very long time!  I for the first time in years I was able to go to the thrift store with out kids too.  Which totally changes the experience.  I spent a whole hour in the store and was so exited about my finds I thought I would share them with you.

The section I always go to first is the kitchen section.  I found some really cute mini Halloween cookie cutters ($0.25), Winnie the Pooh and Tigger chocolate mold ($0.25) and a Valentines Chocolate mold ($0.25).

Next I went to a section I have not been to in years.  When shopping with my kids I tend to stay away from the "breakable" sections.  Which is a little sad for me, because I have a rather odd obsession with mugs.  In college I used to have a lot of really fun looking ones, but then I went through the very sad "I should grow up" phase, and got rid of most in a garage sale.  So it was fun to finally add to my mugs again! I found these really cute mom and dad mugs ($0.50 each) and a fun Buzz one for my son ($0.25)

The I searched through the fabrics, which is always a hit and miss.  But found a good "boy-ish print" for snack bags I hope to get done soon for the boys ($1.25). And some mesh fabric like those vest things you used to have to wear in high school gym class.  I have heard it is a good material to make dish clothes ($1.50)

I lucked out and found this shirt for $3, I was hoping to find more clothes.  But I have learned with thrift store not to have expectations of what you want to find!

And lastly as I was on my way to the check out I spotted this super cute little ceramic rocking horse ($2.00).  Its a little scuffed up but I was able to find some spray paint on clearance at Canadian Tire in a really cute pink shade.  I will post pictures when I get around to doing the project.

For a grand total $9.75, and a lot of fun!!!
